The Dark Eye
The Dark Eye - Basic Rules

Finally come out this August, The Dark Eye, English translation of the German fourth edition of Das Schwarze Auge (In Italy we had the first edition, translated back in 1987).

I bought the Basic Rules volume at Lucca Games 2003 and I've just flipped through it a bit, for now.
It does in fact feature just a little more than the basic rules (which is odd, for a volume titled "Basic Rules" :D ).

What I really like a lot, in this game, is the very detailed setting: yes, you find some of the usual stereotypes, but at the same time that's not all there is and some fascinating realism (or detail, name it as you like) is added.

That said, I personally find the rules system to be a bit heavy, though the character point system is interesting.
Especially combat section is very detailed.
But I'm still waiting for setting supplements, IMHO the reason to buy DSA is in fact Arkania (Aventuria, Atlantis (the old Italian translation), I don't like neither of these two names ^^^; )

Resources on the Internet

The official TDE page (English) is in fact rather empty in content and, apart from some nice pictures, has very little to give but announcements of planned products.

Much more interesting this Realms Of Aventuria (English), featuring various materials, including some rules and news yet to come, translated directly from the German version. There's also a forum (mostly frequented by German or German-speaking players for now), a good reference place to answer questions and doubts anyway.

You can read a review of the Basic Rules (English) more accurate than mine, though pretty biased (while I feel rather satisfied). Certainly DSA was born as the German answer to D&D and it has similarities with it, being fantasy, ruleheavy, but mush less superficial, more rich in atmosphere and details (at least IMHO). Then, be they well-known to experienced players, but to actually see more narrative advice about game conduction whereas D&D only seems to focus on "game balance", this is a thing I always appreciate.

Good old Uno Sguardo Nel Buio

Old, out of print even in Italy (E.Elle publishing has long time ago stopped publishing RPGs), as this is, I won't take the trouble of translating this review I wrote some time ago into English. If you could enjoy the actual game, you can also read my review in italian ^^^
I'll just put a brief comment here. The first volume is introductory and the only thing that is not up to the D&D Red Box (here in Italy, _the_ good old introductory RPG box) is the art. The rest is much better. Light rules, good game advice, it lacked a bit in variety (but so did that D&D). With the second volume comes more variety, more deep and detailed rules, and the first mention to "attacks of opportunity" I have ever seen in a roleplaying game. (not that combat is everything, but I felt it was worth mentioning). And there came a setting, name translated into Atlantis, interesting and with realistic details. It sounds pretty old now, but it was good.
