Monster Collection by Sei Itoh
I had decided to ignore this (rather short) series at first, because I thought it was the usual pseudo-western-fantasy manga, full of fanservice, low-targeted, and ultimately boring for those readers who have already read "pretty every one" of this sort of works, knows they're pretty all alike, and is searching for something more. But after reading a few good comments, I thought I'd give it a chance, and the fact that I found it at a lower price helped too. Well, I must say, I have changed my mind. Of course it still sounds as a western-style fantasy written by someone who has no western cultural background; but it does not sound "worthless the paper it's printed on". Characters are consistent, diversified, and behave in their logical way. There are fights, but not too much of them; of course, this is also due to the series reasonable length, as we see a story beginning, lasting as much time as it has to and then ending; with an ending scene open, a good final for this adventure story, but characters's life goes on. They grow up, but in a reasonable way for a human being. The protagonist is a girl, and while this is definitely not a shojo title, she doesn't just get protected by this time's "handsome guy", rather she does think and act her own role, fights her battles and learns her lessons.
Art quality is really good. I think this is not the first comic by Sei Itoh: lines are solid and clean, anatomy is ok, you get some fanservice, but not too much (with "too much" I mean female characters looking like porn actresses, shown in a series of quite unnatural positions). Bacgrounds, clothes and details are good, better than average. Script timing is very good (this is quite common, though, in japanese comics, and as far as I know script timing is one of the most important things to learn if you want to do comics in Japan). There are also umoristic little scenes here ahd there, which effectively break tension: the author doesn't take things too seriously and this is the right thing to do after all; he clearly isn't aiming to doing a masterpiece of art, but to simple entertaining, and fully achieves that. All in all, a good fantasy comic I recommend both to those readers searching for that something more, and to "classic fantasy" lovers; I think both will have fun. About the storyThe protagonist, Kasche Arbadel, is a young girl student in a summoners school. She's pretty talented, not only in summoning skills, but also in getting in trouble. When the school treasure is stolen, since no other seems available, the school head decides to send her to find it; well knowing her skills are limited. But Kasche is unusually good at making friends, human and not, and this could make the difference. |
