Meridian

Italian issue #1 cover

Just a few words on this series recently come to life again thanks to Dream Colours publishings.
Meridian is part of a group of comics called Crossgen (which is also the name of its American publishing house). Crossgen has been creating a few editorial projects to form a real comic universe, with cross-overs and bonds through series, as usually happens in American super-hero comics.
Of all the Crossgen universe I'm only reading Meridian, which also sound the less supereroistic of all Crossgen series and had just very occasional contacts with the rest of Crossgen universe, resulting perfectly readable alone. It doesn't have much of supereroistic. (yes, there are powers, but they stand out quite enough from "supereroistic canons").

Meridian is a rather original fantasy series, at least because it features a story with some spine in its back and rather well made characters.

Yet its depth is unfortunately far from excessive, and artwork, though of very good quality, lack IMHO in expressivity in some panels (especially the ones where they should show characters feelings) and especially long introspective scenes lack of narrative strength. This makes of Meridian just a good series, when with these ideas and premises it really could have been something more. What a pity.

Dream Colours new issue #1 cover

Plot is rather simple. Meridian is one of several floating islands in a world whose surface is an extremely dangerous place, inhabited by monstrous creatures. People living in these islands travel in floating ships and lead the life of artisans and merchants. But Ihlan, Cadador Minister, is planning to get absolute power, also conquering Meridian island, where his older brother Turos is the Minister. Turos's daughter, Sephie, stand as an obstacle against Ihlan's plans... especially when both are gifted with the mystic powers of a magic sygil, two-faced...

[I don't have information about American version of the comic, but I expect you can find it in any comic shop] The Italian version collects three original issues per issue.

Anyway it's a good quality comic. I'd recommend that you give it at least a look, if you get a chance.
